The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
