An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been advised to avoid talking about classified information in all cars.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
This wider security environment underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
