Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
