The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
